Types of Dental Restoration
Depending on the nature of your problem, your dentist will perform one of two types of dental restorations:
- Direct.
Direct tooth restoration involves placing a filling into a prepared tooth cavity immediately. Dentist chooses from a variety of filling options based on the type and location of the filling and the procedure can be done in a single visit. Glass or resin ionomers are used for replacements near the tooth root or other areas not subjected to heavy pressure from chewing.
- Indirect.
Indirect tooth restoration involves customized tooth replacements in the form of crowns, onlays, or inlays. A crown covers the entire chewing surface of a tooth, an inlay lies within the cusps of the tooth, and an onlay covers and one or more cusp tip, including part of the chewing surface. An indirect tooth restoration will require more than one office visit because the inlay or onlay must be fabricated in a lab. Crowns, inlays and onlays can be made from a variety of materials. Gold is still used for some inlays, but for someone concerned about white teeth, porcelain and tooth-colored composite resins are other options.
Cosmetic dentistry
Whereas restorative dentistry is primarily concerned with keeping mouths healthy and functioning, cosmetic dentistry is more focused on improving the look of your smile. Cosmetic dentistry focus on how well your mouth looks, not how it works.Chipped, uneven, or yellowing teeth are frequent issues which affect self-consciousness for many people. The following procedures are the most popular in cosmetic dentistry.
Teeth whitening
Having your teeth whitened involves bleaching them in order to get rid of any discolouration or stains on the enamel of the tooth. Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel.
Bonding
Small chips and minor discolouration are easily fixed with bonding. It is a tooth-coloured putty that can be molded to fill in holes or chips in teeth and can even be used to fill small cavities. Bonding lasts for a few years.
Contouring
Contouring is the reshaping of a patient’s tooth or teeth. This can mean altering the position, width, length, or the shape. Contouring requires strong, healthy teeth and good overall oral health as it involves either sanding or using a laser to achieve the new shape. Contouring is often used with bonding to fill in chips. Reshaping teeth is permanent option to solve crooked teeth, overlapping teeth, teeth of different lengths, teeth at undesired angles. After contouring, polishing may be done to whiten teeth.
Veneers
Veneers are usually porcelain shells placed to cover the front of the tooth. They are fitted to each tooth and cemented on, changing the colour and shape of the tooth and providing a more permanent change than whitening or bonding. It is an easy way to gain a perfect smile.
Both restorative and cosmetic procedures can be done in the same mouth or can be used individually.Today procedures are available to correct all types of teeth and mouth problems and looks.
